Why Use Mobile Contactless Payments?
Tapping your phone to pay is faster, more hygienic, and often more secure than swiping a card. Both Apple Pay and Google Pay use tokenization — replacing your actual card number with a unique encrypted token — so your real financial data is never shared with the merchant.
This guide walks you through setting up both services from scratch.
Setting Up Apple Pay
What You'll Need
- An iPhone 6 or later, Apple Watch, iPad, or Mac with Touch ID/Face ID
- A supported debit or credit card
- iOS 12.4 or later
Step-by-Step Setup
- Open the Wallet app on your iPhone.
- Tap the + (Add) button in the top right corner.
- Select "Debit or Credit Card".
- Position your card in the camera frame, or enter the details manually.
- Enter the card's security code (CVV) when prompted.
- Agree to your card issuer's terms and complete verification — usually via a text message code or a call to your bank.
- Your card is now ready. It will appear in your Wallet.
How to Pay with Apple Pay
- In stores: Double-click the side button (Face ID) or rest your finger on Touch ID, then hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless terminal.
- Online/in apps: Tap the "Apple Pay" button at checkout and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID.
- With Apple Watch: Double-click the side button and hold the display near the reader.
Setting Up Google Pay (Google Wallet)
What You'll Need
- An Android phone with NFC capability (most modern Android phones)
- Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or later
- The Google Wallet app (download from Google Play)
Step-by-Step Setup
- Download and open the Google Wallet app.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Tap "Add to Wallet" and then "Payment card".
- Choose to add a new card or use one already saved to your Google account.
- Enter your card details or scan the card with your camera.
- Accept the issuer's terms and verify your card (SMS code or bank call).
- Ensure NFC is enabled: go to Settings → Connected Devices → NFC and toggle it on.
How to Pay with Google Pay
- In stores: Unlock your phone, then hold the back of your phone near the contactless payment terminal. Look for the contactless symbol (four curved lines).
- Online/in apps: Select "Google Pay" at checkout. Your saved cards appear — select one and confirm.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Mobile Payments
- Set a default card so you're not choosing every time.
- Add loyalty cards and boarding passes to your Wallet for an all-in-one experience.
- Check for exclusive offers — both Apple and Google periodically offer cashback deals at select retailers.
- If a terminal doesn't work, ensure the store's reader supports NFC (contactless). Not all terminals do.
Is It Safe?
Yes — in many ways, mobile payments are safer than physical cards. Your card number is never transmitted; instead, a one-time token is used. Even if a merchant is breached, your actual card details remain protected. Always use a device passcode or biometric lock to ensure your phone itself stays secure.
